The experience
This 8-day, 7-night journey takes you from Ulaanbaatar through Bulgan to Khuvsgul Lake, then across the Darkhad Valley and into the East Taiga. Along the way, explore the Khordol Saridag mountains, stop in northern villages, and spend time with Tsaatan families and their reindeer.The ride into the East Taiga takes about 5–6 hours on horseback. You’ll stay with a Tsaatan family before returning through Khatgal, Murun, and Bulgan. Your journey, day by day
- Day 1
Ulaanbaatar → Unit, Bulgan. Depart at 08:00 from the Trade Union Cultural Palace entrance at Baruun 4 Zam. Stop for lunch on the road and settle into the camp in Unit. After dinner, meet the group for a trip introduction and spend the night at camp.
- Day 2
Unit → Khuvsgul Lake, Khatgal. After breakfast, travel through Khutag-Undur, Ikh-Uul, and Tosontsengel, stopping in Murun for lunch. Arrive in Khatgal in the afternoon and settle in by Khuvsgul Lake for dinner and an overnight stay.
- Day 3
Khatgal → Ulaan-Uul. Set off for the Darkhad Valley after breakfast. Visit the 13 Darkhad ovoos and local historic sites along the way, with a break for tea and rest. Arrive in Ulaan-Uul in the evening for dinner and an overnight stay.
- Day 4
Ulaan-Uul → Renchinlkhumbe. Travel toward Renchinlkhumbe after breakfast, taking in the Khordol Saridag range, Delgerkhaan Mountain, and Ar Bosgot Canyon. Arrive in the evening, settle in, and have dinner before resting.
- Day 5
Renchinlkhumbe → East Taiga, Tsaatan family. Stop by the Jargant River for photos, then pass through Tsagaannuur. Continue on horseback for about 5–6 hours to the East Taiga. Meet a Tsaatan family, see their reindeer, and learn about daily life before dinner and an overnight stay with the family.
- Day 6
East Taiga → Khatgal. After breakfast, explore the taiga and visit reindeer-herding families. Take photos and learn more about local life before beginning the return journey. Arrive in Khatgal in the evening for dinner and an overnight stay.
- Day 7
Khatgal → Unit, Bulgan. Visit Khatgal’s souvenir and local product shops after breakfast. Pause in Murun for any shopping you need, then continue toward Unit in the afternoon. Settle in for dinner and an overnight stay.
- Day 8
Unit → Ulaanbaatar. Leave after breakfast and stop at Tuluugiin Pass for hot buuz and a rest. Continue through Bulgan, Erdenet, and Darkhan, arriving in Ulaanbaatar in the evening.
